Chapter 4
A Selfless Choice
Elara realizes her wish can save the doe and, consequently, her village. She resolves to use the hearthstone's magic for this selfless act, choosing the well-being of others over her own desires.
The weight of the hearthstone in Elara’s hands was no longer just the physical substance of ancient rock; it was the palpable pressure of a single, potent choice. She sat by the dying embers of the hearth, the village’s dwindling firewood a stark reminder of their collective hardship. Outside, the wind howled a mournful tune, a symphony of frost and despair that had become the soundtrack to their lives. Each gust seemed to carry with it the chill of hunger, the gnawing fear of what the next day might bring.
Her mind, however, was not filled with the immediate pangs of her own stomach or the cold seeping into her bones. The elders, in their wisdom, had spoken of the blight as a curse, a punishment for some forgotten transgression. They spoke of ancient remedies, of prayers to appease the spirits of the land, but their words felt like grains of sand against a tidal wave. Elara, with the hearthstone tucked safely beneath her worn cloak, knew a different truth. This was not a curse to be appeased, but a sickness to be healed, and she held the cure.
