Chapter 9
Art Against Darkness
Lyra's subtle artistic magic proves to be more than mere beauty. It can soothe frayed nerves and inspire hope, a vital counterpoint to the fear the Shadow Weaver sows.
Lyra’s fingers danced across the rough-hewn surface of a discarded shard of obsidian, her movements fluid and sure. Where before she had found only stark blackness, now a faint, shimmering iridescence began to bloom under her touch. Nagayanah watched, a silent observer from the shadowed periphery of their makeshift camp, the air around them thick with the damp scent of moss and the lingering unease of their recent flight. The cacophony of the Crimson Thicket had finally subsided, leaving behind a fragile quietude that felt more like a held breath than true peace.
Kael, ever pragmatic, was sharpening his scavenged blade, the rasp of metal against stone a familiar, grounding sound. He shot a glance at Nagayanah, his expression unreadable, then at Lyra, a flicker of something akin to wonder softening his usual cynicism. Lyra, however, was lost in her creation. The obsidian shard was transforming, not into a depiction of the world as it was—a world of jagged edges and looming shadows—but of something else entirely. Swirls of soft, luminescent blues and greens began to unfurl, reminiscent of the bioluminescent flora Nagayanah had encountered in the Whispering Caves, but imbued with a warmth that seemed to emanate from within the stone itself.
“It’s… different,” Nagayanah finally said, her voice low, a ripple in the stillness.
