The air in the makeshift camp was thick with the scent of damp earth and the lingering unease of their recent flight. Nagayanah, her senses still attuned to the subtle shifts in the wind and the rustling of unseen creatures, found little solace in the flickering firelight. It cast long, dancing shadows that seemed to mock the fragile safety they had carved out for themselves. Beside her, Kael sharpened a crude knife with a rhythmic rasp, his movements economical and precise, his gaze perpetually scanning the perimeter. He offered no comfort, no platitudes, only the silent reassurance of his readiness.

The newcomer was small, almost bird-like in her movements, with hair the color of spun moonlight that cascaded around a face framed by luminous, wide eyes. She carried a bundle of dried herbs and strange, brightly colored stones, her hands moving with a delicate grace that was both captivating and utterly foreign. This was Lyra, Kael had explained earlier, another of the world’s discarded souls, a creature whose very existence was deemed an aberration by those who clung to the rigid order of this land.
