The air grew heavy, thick with a palpable despair that clung to Nagayanah’s skin like a damp shroud. It was a familiar sensation, a muted echo of the distress she’d felt from dying trees or poisoned streams in her own world, but amplified a thousandfold. This was not the gentle ache of a wounded creature; this was a scream ripping through the very fabric of existence. Kael, his usual cynicism momentarily replaced by a grim unease, kept a hand on the hilt of his scavenged blade, his eyes scanning the oppressive gloom. Lyra, her face pale, clutched a small, intricately carved wooden bird, her fingers tracing its smooth contours as if seeking solace.
“It’s stronger here,” Nagayanah murmured, her voice barely a breath. She could feel it, a pulsating wound at the core of this alien landscape, a place where the vibrant hum of life that usually resonated within her had twisted into a discordant throb. It was like listening to a symphony played in reverse, each note a painful shriek.
They had followed the whispers, the subtle distortions in the natural energies, the trails of wilting flora and frightened fauna. Each step had led them deeper into a region that felt fundamentally wrong. The trees here were skeletal, their branches clawing at a bruised sky. The ground, usually teeming with unseen life, was barren, a cracked and dusty testament to a profound sickness.
