The air in the small studio, usually thick with the scent of developing chemicals and the quiet hum of anticipation, seemed to hold its breath. Sunlight, fractured and softened by the dusty panes of the north-facing window, painted shifting patterns on the wooden floorboards. Carol traced the grain with the toe of her worn leather boot, a familiar comfort, yet today it felt alien, as if the very earth beneath her feet had subtly rearranged itself.
He was across the room, sorting through a box of old negatives, the late afternoon light catching the silver threads in his dark hair. A quiet industry about him, a focused grace that had, in the space of a few short months, become the anchor of her world. Before him, her life had been a series of carefully constructed routines, a tapestry woven with the threads of memory and a quiet, enduring grief. She had learned to live with the echoes, to find solace in their familiar cadence. But he… he had brought a symphony where there had only been a solo.
He looked up then, his eyes, the colour of warm earth after a rain, meeting hers. A slow smile bloomed on his face, a sunrise that chased away any lingering shadows. "Lost in thought?" he asked, his voice a low rumble that vibrated somewhere deep within her chest.
