The attic air hung thick and cloying, a stagnant breath of dust and forgotten lives. Maya, hunched over a decaying steamer trunk, felt a prickle of sweat trace a path down her temple. The faint glow of her phone’s flashlight cut through the gloom, illuminating the brittle pages of a leather-bound journal. Liam had been right, of course. This place was a tomb, a monument to decay. But for Maya, it was also a puzzle, a labyrinth of secrets begging to be unraveled.

She’d found the trunk tucked away in the furthest corner, almost swallowed by shadows. It smelled of mildew and something else, something acrid and faintly metallic, like old blood. Inside, nestled amongst moth-eaten linens and a scattering of yellowed photographs, lay the journal. The leather was cracked and dry, the gold lettering on the spine worn to illegibility. But the pages, oh, the pages. They were filled with a spidery, almost feverish script, a testament to a mind teetering on the brink.

“Anything?” Liam’s voice, a low rumble from the attic stairs, made her jump. He stood silhouetted against the faint light filtering from the hallway, his face a mask of concern.
