The air in the library was thick, not just with the dust of forgotten ages, but with a palpable dread that clung to Liam like a shroud. The flickering lamplight cast long, dancing shadows that contorted the already grotesque carvings on the ancient table, making them writhe like trapped souls. Maya, her eyes blazing with a desperate, almost feverish intensity, traced the intricate symbols on the aged parchment spread before them. Her voice, usually so melodious, was hoarse, strained from hours of poring over the forbidden text.

"It has to be this," she rasped, her finger hovering over a particularly disturbing sigil that looked like a tangled knot of thorns. "The counter-invocation. It’s our only chance."

Chloe huddled closer to Liam, her small frame trembling. Her knuckles were white where she clutched his arm, her breath coming in shallow, rapid gasps. She had seen things, felt things, that no rational mind could easily dismiss, and the growing darkness pressing in on them was a tangible entity, suffocating her very will to breathe. "Are you sure, Maya? It… it feels so wrong. Like we're inviting something even worse in."
