With their backs against the wall, Maya, using her research, and Noah, with his hidden knowledge, devise a desperate counter-ritual. It's a dangerous gamble, requiring a sacrifice they may not be willing to make.
The air in the parlor was thick, cloying with the scent of decay and something else, something metallic and foul that clung to the back of Liam’s throat. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of moonlight that pierced the grime-caked window, illuminating the chaos of overturned furniture and scattered journals. Maya, her eyes wide and feverish, traced a symbol on the floor with trembling fingers, her breath coming in ragged gasps. Noah stood beside her, a grim set to his jaw, his usual detached cynicism replaced by a stark, almost desperate focus. Chloe huddled in the corner, a small, whimpering bundle of terror, her face buried in her hands.
“Are you sure about this, Maya?” Liam’s voice was a low rasp, strained with exhaustion and a gnawing fear that had become a constant companion. He watched her, his gut twisting. She looked like a ghost herself, her skin pallid, her hair a tangled mess, but there was a fire in her eyes, a manic brilliance that both terrified and compelled him.
Maya didn’t look up. “It’s the only way, Liam. The texts… they speak of a binding, a reversal. We have to sever its connection before it’s too late. Before it consumes us all.” Her voice cracked, and a tear traced a clean path through the grime on her cheek.
