The air in the house had always been heavy, thick with the dust of ages and a silence that pressed in on the eardrums. But now, it was different. It was a palpable weight, a suffocating shroud that clung to their skin and made breathing a conscious, laborious effort. The subtle unease of the past few days had curdled into a primal dread, a certainty that they were no longer alone, and that whatever shared their space was not merely a specter.
