The dusty attic air hung heavy, a tangible presence that clung to Rachel’s clothes and settled in her throat. Sarah, a smudge of dirt on her cheek, was wrestling with a warped wooden chest, her brow furrowed in concentration. They had spent the better part of the afternoon up here, sifting through the detritus of lives long past, driven by a gnawing certainty that the answers lay hidden amongst the cobwebs and forgotten trinkets. The ghost, Eleanor, had been more insistent than ever last night, her ethereal touch a cold caress on Sarah’s arm, her spectral sighs a mournful lament that seemed to weave itself into the very fabric of the house.

“This thing is heavier than it looks,” Sarah grunted, finally dislodging the chest with a resounding thud. Dust billowed up, momentarily obscuring her face.

Rachel coughed, waving a hand in front of her mouth. “Careful. We don’t want to bring the whole ceiling down on us. Did you find anything in that last box?”
