It was a sensation Sarah had grown accustomed to, a heavy cloak draped over her shoulders whenever she was alone in the house, but tonight, Rachel felt it too. The flicker of the lamp on the side table, a rhythmic pulse that had begun to plague their evenings, seemed less like a faulty wire and more like a deliberate signal. Rachel, ever the pragmatist, had already tightened every bulb, checked every connection, but the lamp persisted in its melancholic beat.

"It's like it's… breathing," Sarah whispered, her voice barely audible above the low hum of the refrigerator. She sat curled on the sofa, a half-finished sketchpad resting on her lap, her charcoal pencil frozen mid-air. The spectral dance of the lamp's light cast long, shifting shadows across the room, transforming familiar furniture into grotesque silhouettes.

Rachel, perched on the edge of an armchair, her brow furrowed in concentration, finally abandoned her attempts at rational explanation. "Breathing? Sarah, it's a lamp." But even as she spoke, a faint tremor ran through the floorboards beneath her feet, a sensation too subtle to be dismissed as settling. It felt… intentional.
