The silence was the first thing Rachel noticed. Not the absence of noise, but the profound, settled quiet that had descended upon the house like a soft blanket. It was a quiet that hummed with peace, a stark contrast to the ethereal discord that had once permeated its walls. Sunlight, warm and unapologetic, streamed through the living room windows, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air, each a tiny testament to the life that was now, finally, allowed to unfold.

Sarah sat on the worn velvet sofa, a half-finished sketchpad resting on her lap. She wasn’t drawing, though. Her gaze was fixed on the far wall, on the spot where, for so long, an icy chill had lingered, a spectral presence felt more than seen. A faint smile played on her lips, a quiet contentment that mirrored the house’s newfound serenity.

“It’s… really over, isn’t it?” Sarah whispered, her voice barely disturbing the stillness.
