The wind howled like a hungry wolf outside my cottage, rattling the frosted windowpanes. Snow swirled in thick, blinding sheets, a testament to the fury of the storm. But it wasn’t just the winter’s rage that made my heart pound like a drum against my ribs. It was the creeping chill that had nothing to do with the snow, a cold that seeped into my bones and whispered of a darkness I could feel stirring, drawn by the crimson moon and my own unpredictable magic.

Grandmother Elara’s words echoed in my mind, a soft, reedy sound against the storm’s roar. “The old ways are not forgotten, child. They are simply waiting.” Waiting for what? For me to be ready? I gripped my staff, its smooth wood warm beneath my fingers, and felt a familiar thrum of power surge through me. It was a wild, untamed thing, this magic, like a skittish colt that bucked and reared whenever I tried to guide it. And the darkness, I knew, was drawn to that wildness.

The Crimson Moon, usually a steady, comforting presence in the perpetual twilight, seemed to pulse with an anxious light tonight. Its heavy glow, usually a source of strength, felt like a spotlight, illuminating my own burgeoning power and, inadvertently, the path for the encroaching darkness. I had to learn, and fast. My lineage, a mystery shrouded in whispers and half-told tales, held the key.
