Chapter 6
The First Shadow
The encroaching darkness makes its first direct move, manifesting as shadowy creatures testing Amy's defenses. She repels them, but the encounter reveals the true danger and her own raw, untamed power.
The wind howled a mournful song outside my little cottage, a melody I knew all too well. It wasn't just the usual blizzard’s fury; there was a sharpness to it, a bite that felt like it was trying to claw its way through the thick, frosted windowpanes. The Crimson Moon, a bloated, ruby eye in the bruised twilight sky, cast long, eerie shadows that danced with the falling snow. I clutched my staff, its crystal tip humming with a familiar warmth against my palm. It was an old friend, a steady presence in this wild, frozen world I called home.
My sanctuary, hidden deep within the whispering pines and guarded by the ancient magic that slumbered beneath the snow, felt… uneasy. It was a prickling sensation, like a thousand tiny needles against my skin, a warning that something was stirring beyond the familiar white expanse. The Crimson Moon’s glow, usually a comforting beacon, seemed to pulse with a nervous energy tonight, and I felt it too, a restless thrumming deep within my bones. My own magic, the wild, untamed thing that sometimes felt like a tempest inside me, was restless, too. It yearned to lash out, to defend, but it didn't know how. It was like a wild bird, desperate to fly but unsure of the direction.
Then, I saw them. At first, they were just smudges against the swirling snow, darker than the deepest night. They coalesced, growing, stretching, their forms indistinct, like ink spilled on frosted glass. Shadowy creatures, born from the encroaching darkness, they slithered and crawled, their movements unnervingly silent, save for the whisper of snow disturbed. They were testing me. Testing my defenses, testing the strength of this hidden place.
