The wind howled like a wounded beast, clawing at the thick, frosted windows of my small cottage. Outside, the world was a swirling vortex of white, a tempest that had been raging for days, mirroring the storm brewing within me. The Crimson Moon, usually a comforting, if eerie, presence, seemed to pulse with a desperate, frantic light, casting long, dancing shadows that played tricks on my eyes. It felt weaker tonight, its usual steady glow flickering like a dying ember. And with its fading, so did my courage.

The air crackled not just with the residual magic from my warding spells, but with something else, something cold and ancient and profoundly wrong. It seeped into the very marrow of my bones, a chilling reminder of the encroaching darkness. It was a palpable force, a hunger that thrummed beneath the snow, drawn by the moon’s dying breath and, I feared, by the wild, untamed magic that surged through my own veins.

I gripped my staff, its familiar wood cool against my sweaty palms. It felt heavier tonight, a burden rather than a tool. The spells I’d woven, the protective enchantments that had always felt so solid, now seemed fragile, gossamer threads against the relentless assault of the storm and the unseen enemy it harbored. Doubt, a venomous serpent, coiled in my gut. What if I wasn't strong enough? What if the ancient secret I was sworn to protect was destined to be swallowed by this endless winter?
