The wind howled like a hungry wolf at my window, a mournful song that echoed the tempest brewing inside me. Outside, the blizzard had become a living, breathing thing, a swirling vortex of white that clawed at my small cottage. Snow piled high, burying the world in a silent, suffocating shroud. The crimson moon, usually a comforting presence, was a bruised eye peering through the maelstrom, its light fractured and weak. This was it. The heart of the storm, and the heart of my fear.

My staff, usually warm and humming with familiar energy, felt skittish, the arcane sparks crackling erratically along its polished wood. The encroaching darkness, the tendrils of which I’d felt creeping closer for days, was no longer a distant threat. It was here, breathing down my neck, its icy touch seeping through the very stone of my sanctuary. It was drawn to the moon, yes, but it was also drawn to *me*. To this burgeoning power that felt like a wild river within my veins, threatening to overflow its banks.

I knew what I had to do. The lessons from the ancients, the fragmented whispers from my lineage, they all pointed to this. To face the source. To venture into the heart of the blizzard, where the darkness’s grip was strongest. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. Every instinct screamed at me to stay put, to huddle by the hearth and let the storm rage itself out. But I was a witch, a guardian. And this secret, this magic slumbering beneath the snow, was mine to protect.
