Chapter 15
The Nature of Time
The experience forces a reevaluation of time and reality. Was it a dream, a hallucination, or a genuine encounter with a pocket of the past?
The car sputtered to a halt, the engine sighing like a tired old man. We were miles from anywhere, the sun beating down with a ferocity that seemed to bake the very air. Dust devils danced on the desolate roadside, tiny cyclones of grit and heat. Katrina, my daughter, her face smudged with the grime of the journey, whimpered from the back seat. The general store seemed to shed its decrepitude, its paint brightening, its porch straightening, as if shedding an illusion. It was as if we had driven through a veil, leaving the desolate South behind and entering a sun-drenched, idyllic version of… Erie, Pennsylvania? It couldn't be. This was the deep South, the dusty roads a testament to that. Yet, the verdant landscape, the impossibly clear sky, whispered of a different place, a different time.
