Chapter 14
Raymond's Legacy Revisited
The narrator contemplates the parallels between her grandfather's store, marked by generosity and loss, and the spectral store, a place of transient comfort.
The hum of the tires on the asphalt was a familiar lullaby, a counterpoint to the rhythmic click of Katrina Marie’s plastic dinosaur against the window. The sun, a relentless, molten disc, beat down on the dusty landscape of rural Mississippi, the air thick and heavy, tasting of baked earth and distant pine. My throat was as parched as the cracked soil outside, and Katrina Marie’s whines for “water, Mommy, please!” were growing more insistent. It was in that moment, as the heat shimmered and distorted the horizon, that I saw it. A flicker, a smudge of color against the monotonous brown, growing larger, resolving itself into the shape of a building. An old general store, its paint peeling like sunburnt skin, but with a hopeful, almost defiant, porch.
As we drew closer, something shifted. The oppressive heat seemed to recede, replaced by a gentle, caressing breeze. The dusty road beneath us softened, turning to a well-trodden path, edged with wildflowers bursting in hues I’d only seen in antique paintings. The air itself seemed to sweeten, carrying the intoxicating perfume of honeysuckle. It was as if we’d driven through a veil, and on the other side, the world was reborn. The general store, once a forlorn silhouette, now stood proud, its wood gleaming, its windows sparkling, a beacon of vibrant life. A sign, hand-painted with a flourish, proclaimed: “Sanner’s Mercantile – Est. 1820.”
My heart gave a strange, anticipatory leap. Sanner. My grandfather’s name. But this was Erie, Pennsylvania, not Mississippi. This was a century and a half ago, judging by the architecture. A wave of dizziness washed over me, and I gripped the steering wheel, my knuckles white. Katrina Marie, bless her innocent heart, was already unbuckling her harness. “Mommy, look! It’s so pretty!” she exclaimed, her earlier thirst momentarily forgotten in the face of this sudden, enchanting transformation.
