The air in my small study, usually so alive with the hum of benevolent magic and the scent of dried lavender, felt thick and heavy. It clung to me like damp wool, a palpable unease that had settled since my visitor had departed just an hour before. He had come seeking solace, a kind soul burdened by a grief so profound it seemed to radiate from him in waves. I had offered him tea brewed with chamomile and moonpetal, and spoken softly of letting go, of the gentle currents of time that carry all sorrows eventually to the sea. He had left with a flicker of hope in his eyes, a tiny ember rekindled, and I had felt a quiet satisfaction.

But something was wrong. Flicker, my ever-present sprite companion, was not his usual effervescent self. He usually flitted about, a tiny whirlwind of iridescent wings and giggling whispers, chasing sunbeams or rearranging the petals of the dried flowers that adorned my shelves. Today, however, he was listless, his usual bright shimmer dulled to a faint, flickering luminescence. He sat curled on the velvet cushion of my armchair, his tiny form trembling almost imperceptibly, his large, luminous eyes wide and clouded with a distress that mirrored the visitor’s own.

“Flicker?” I asked, my voice soft, filled with concern. I knelt beside the armchair, my heart aching at the sight of his subdued state. “What troubles you, little one?”
