The air in the room, thick with the scent of stale ambition and the faintest hint of regret, seemed to press in on Elias. He hadn’t realized he’d been holding his breath until the realization settled, cold and heavy, in his chest. He saw it then, not as a specter or a shadow, but as a stillness that had always been there, lurking at the periphery of his vision. Death. It was here.
He didn’t flinch. He didn’t cry out. The fight had been too long, too consuming, for a sudden burst of terror. This was the quiet exhaustion that seeped into the bones, the kind that left you feeling hollowed out, a mere shell of the person you once were. The kind that made the simple act of breathing feel like a monumental effort.
He set his drink down, the clink of the glass against the polished wood a small, defiant sound in the encroaching silence. He’d call the waiter over. Pay his tab. A hustler didn’t leave debts, not even to the ultimate creditor. His mother, Eleanor, had drilled that into him with every whispered prayer and every mended seam. “A good name is worth more than gold, Elias,” she’d said, her voice a gentle rasp against the worn pages of her Bible.
