The air in the room had thinned, not with the smoke of a thousand late nights, but with something far more insidious, something that leached the warmth from the very bones. Elias sat, not at a bar, but on the edge of a precipice, the hum of the city a distant, muffled thrum beneath the deafening silence that had descended. Death, a presence as palpable as the cold sweat prickling his skin, waited with an unnerving stillness. Elias hadn't summoned it. It had simply arrived, unannounced, the final, unwelcome guest.

"My son will make me proud." The promise, a seed planted in fertile ground, had sprouted into a towering oak of ambition within him. He’d left home with little more than a worn duffel bag, a heart brimming with a desperate hunger, and a faith that was less about divine intervention and more about sheer, unadulterated grit. Hunger for a full stomach, yes, but more profoundly, a hunger to never again feel the gnawing emptiness of poverty.
