The air grew thick and heavy, a humid embrace that clung to Anya’s skin the moment Mateo steered their small, dugout canoe away from the relative calm of the wider river. The water, once a placid brown serpent, now churned with a restless energy. Ahead, the narrow channel twisted and turned, a watery labyrinth framed by an impenetrable wall of emerald green. This was the Amazon, raw and untamed, a place that dwarfed Anya’s every expectation.

“The river,” Mateo said, his voice a low rumble that seemed to blend with the symphony of unseen creatures, “it does not forgive haste. Nor does it suffer fools.” He gestured with a weathered hand towards the churning water ahead. “These are the Rapids of the Serpent’s Tongue. Many have tried to pass them with arrogance. Few have succeeded.”

Anya’s heart hammered against her ribs. The ‘Serpent’s Tongue’ sounded less like a geographical feature and more like a personal threat. She glanced at the map, the aged parchment now a familiar weight in her waterproof pouch. Her grandfather’s spidery script, once a source of gentle nostalgia, now felt like a set of urgent commands. A series of interlocking symbols, barely decipherable, seemed to vibrate with a hidden meaning under the dappled sunlight filtering through the canopy.
