Chapter 6
A Cryptic Warning
Anya receives a garbled radio message warning her about Lilly and the dangers ahead. It reinforces the importance of her grandfather's map and the need for caution as she ventures deeper into the Amazon.
The static crackled, a tempest of white noise that threatened to swallow Anya’s very thoughts. She fiddled with the dial of the old radio, her knuckles white, her brow furrowed in concentration. The air in the small cabin of the *Sea Serpent* felt thick, heavy with the humidity that had become her constant companion. Outside, the Amazon River, a colossal serpent of brown water, coiled and uncoiled, its murky depths hiding a thousand secrets. She was deeper in now than she’d ever been, the familiar coastline a distant memory, replaced by an impenetrable wall of green.
Her grandfather’s map, spread across the small table, seemed to pulse with a life of its own under the dim glow of the lantern. The ink, faded and brittle, traced a path through a labyrinth of tributaries and dense jungle. Each symbol, each cryptic marking, felt like a riddle waiting to be solved, a whispered secret from a man she’d loved and lost. He had always spoken of the Amazon, of its wild beauty and its hidden wonders, but there had always been an undercurrent of something more, a hushed reverence that now, with this map in her hands, Anya was beginning to understand.
Suddenly, the static shifted, coalescing into something almost intelligible. A voice, strained and distorted, fought its way through the interference. “...danger… Lilly… beware… map… not what… protect…” The words were fragments, like shards of glass, sharp and unsettling. Anya leaned closer, straining to catch every syllable. “She… knows… grandfather’s… she’ll… stop… you…”
