The air hung thick and humid, a tangible presence that clung to Anya’s skin like a second shirt. Parrot calls, sharp and raucous, pierced the dense canopy, a constant underscore to the rustling symphony of the jungle. Mateo, his movements fluid and silent as a jaguar, led the way, his machete a silver arc against the emerald tangle. Anya followed close behind, her senses on high alert, the map clutched in her hand feeling less like a guide and more like a beacon for trouble. Chapter 11 had ended with the unsettling realization that they were not alone, that the shadows held eyes, and the whispers were not merely the wind.

“Slow,” Mateo murmured, his voice a low rumble that barely disturbed the oppressive quiet. He held up a hand, his gaze fixed on a cluster of trees ahead. Anya strained her eyes, trying to discern what had caught his attention. The jungle, in its infinite greenness, offered a thousand hiding places.

Suddenly, a sharp crack echoed through the trees, followed by a desperate cry. It was a man’s voice, laced with panic. “Help! Please, someone help!”
