The sun felt warmer, the laughter louder, and the whole playground buzzed with an energy I hadn't noticed before. It was like the world had just switched on its brightest colors, and we were all living inside a giant, happy painting. Carroms was back in its rightful place, its smooth wooden surface gleaming under the afternoon sun, waiting for us. But something else had changed too, something even bigger than the return of our favorite board game.

Maya, Sam, and I were huddled by the swings, not even swinging, just talking. The rival kids, the ones we’d faced off against in that epic tetherball battle, were now… well, they were just kids. The same kids who had been on the other side of the fence, the ones we’d imagined as fierce, unbeatable game thieves. Now, they were sharing the handball court with us, their faces flushed from playing, not from anger.

“I still can’t believe we actually beat them,” Sam said, bouncing a slightly deflated kickball on his knee. He’d been the one to accidentally trip the rival kid’s best player during the tetherball match, a moment that had sent a jolt of panic through me, but it had also somehow leveled the playing field. The rival leader, a kid named Marcus with a shock of dark hair that always looked like he’d just run through a wind tunnel, had been surprisingly cool about it.
