The string whipped around the pole, a blur of white against the bright blue sky. My heart hammered against my ribs like a drum solo. Maya was up, her ponytail a brown streak as she leaped, trying to connect her fist with the ball. Sam was on the sidelines, practically vibrating with nervous energy, his hands shoved deep into his pockets. And across from us, the rival kids, their faces set in grim determination, waited for their turn. This was it. The tetherball showdown. The fate of Carroms, our beloved board game, hung on this spinning ball.

“Come on, Maya!” I yelled, my voice cracking a little. The sun beat down, making the playground shimmer, but all I could see was that ball, that pole, and the hope of getting our game back. Maya was good, really good, but their leader, the one with the ridiculously confident smirk, was even better. He’d practically hypnotized the ball on his last few swings.

Maya jumped again, her fingers brushing the ball. So close! It swung back, taunting us. Their leader stepped up, his eyes narrowed. He spun the ball with a flick of his wrist, and it whizzed around the pole, a tiny white comet. Maya dodged, her feet a blur. This was a dance, a fast-paced, high-stakes dance. Every swing, every dodge, was a chapter in our summer adventure.
