Chapter 9

Epilogue: The Next Big Score

4 min read

Three months later, Otterton was a different place.

The hatchery was thriving.

The river was full of healthy young fish.

The raccoons had become respectable business partners, though nobody trusted them with the cash box.

And the otter clan had earned a new reputation.

They were no longer known as the most notorious thieves in the valley.

They were known as the most unpredictable helpers in the valley.

Which, according to the heron, was somehow worse.

One crisp autumn morning, Boss Otter gathered his family inside the den.

He stood atop his favorite moss-covered boulder.

He wore his battered fishing hat, his crooked grin, and a brand-new mustache.

"Family," he announced, "I have an important business proposition."

Mabel groaned.

Pip and Squeak exchanged excited looks.

Grandpa Gus opened one eye.

Willa slowly lowered her book.

"Papa," she said cautiously, "what are you planning?"

Boss unfurled a large sheet of paper.

Across the top, in enormous letters, were the words:

THE GREAT OTTERTON HONEY HEIST.

Willa stared at the map.

Then she stared at her father.

"Papa, we're otters."

Boss nodded solemnly.

"Which is why nobody will suspect us."

Outside, a bee buzzed past the window.

Somewhere across town, Rocco Raccoon sneezed.

Willa looked at the ridiculous map, the eager faces of her family, and the brand-new mustache perched proudly beneath her father's nose.

Then she smiled.

"All right," she said. "But this time, we make a plan that doesn't involve stealing."

Boss's grin faltered.

"Not even a little?"

"Not even a little."

Mabel raised a paw. "And no borrowed canoes."

Pip and Squeak raised their paws. "And no duck disguises!"

Grandpa Gus opened both eyes. "And sandwiches?"

"Sandwiches are allowed," Willa said.

Boss considered the terms.

Then he rolled up the map.

"Very well. The Great Otterton Honey Heist is officially renamed..."

He turned the paper around.

On the back, Willa had written:

THE GREAT OTTERTON HONEY DELIVERY.

Boss read it aloud.

"Honey delivery?"

"Bees need help moving their honey harvest to the market," Willa explained. "We can carry the jars, earn a fair share, and nobody has to run from an angry beekeeper."

Boss's eyes brightened.

"An honest business with snacks?"

"Exactly."

He placed a paw over his heart.

"Family, I believe this may be our greatest score yet."

Outside, the bee buzzed past the window again.

This time, Boss waved politely.

The otters, raccoons, and their newest business partners soon set off toward the meadow, carrying empty baskets and a very carefully labeled map.

They still got lost.

They still argued.

Pip and Squeak still tried to disguise themselves as bees.

And Grandpa Gus still ate one of the sandwiches before they reached the first hive.

But by sunset, every jar had been delivered, every bee had been thanked, and Boss Otter had earned enough honey to buy the family a brand-new canoe.

A canoe that belonged to them.

Mostly.

As the clan paddled home beneath the golden evening sky, Willa leaned against her father.

"Papa?"

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"Do you still want to be famous?"

Boss looked at his family, their friends, and the shining river carrying them home.

He smiled.

"Only if I can be famous with all of you."

Willa hugged him.

Behind them, Rocco called, "Boss! The canoe is leaking!"

Mabel shouted, "Pip! Stop paddling backward!"

Grandpa Gus yelled, "Who ate my emergency sandwich?"

And Boss Otter laughed so loudly that the fish leaped from the river to listen.

The Great Otter Caper had begun with a foolish plan to steal fish.

It had ended with a rescued hatchery, a new friendship, an honest business, and a family that had finally discovered what made a truly great adventure.

Not the treasure.Not the fame.

Not even the sandwiches.

It was having someone beside you when the plan went wrong—and making a better plan together.

And in Otterton, there was always another plan waiting just around the bend.

THE END.
