The moon, a sliver of bone in the velvet dome of night, offered scant illumination as the four leaders began their trek. Elder Stone Hand, his gait steady despite the years etched into his frame, led the way. Beside him, Swift River Woman moved with the coiled grace of a predator, her gaze sweeping the shadowed contours of the land. Silent Hawk followed, a wraith in the dim light, his silence a cloak woven from unspoken grief. Behind them, the younger warriors, the "Unconventional Few" Swift River Woman had so carefully cultivated, moved with a quiet purpose, their steps light, their senses sharp.
The air was thick with the scent of pine and damp earth, a perfume of the wild that usually brought solace, but tonight, it carried the sharp tang of apprehension. Each rustle of leaves, each snap of a twig, was a question mark in the darkness. They were venturing into the untamed heart of their ancestral lands, lands now claimed by those who had once walked among them, their loyalty fractured, their oaths broken.
"The path grows steeper," Elder Stone Hand murmured, his voice a low rumble, like stones shifting in a riverbed. His hand, gnarled and strong, reached out, not to steady himself, but to brush against a low-hanging branch, a gesture of familiar communion with the forest. His fingers, however, trembled ever so slightly as they withdrew, a tremor that did not escape the watchful eyes of Swift River Woman. It was a subtle discord in his stoic bearing, a hint of the weight he carried, a weight he bore alone.
