The moon, a sliver of bone against the bruised velvet of the night sky, cast long, dancing shadows across the clearing. A fire, small and contained, pulsed like a captured heart, its warmth a meager defiance against the encroaching chill. Around it sat four figures, their faces etched by the flickering light, each a repository of ancient stories and present burdens. Elder Stone Hand, his gaze fixed on the dancing flames, seemed to absorb their light, his stoic silence a testament to the weight he carried. Beside him, Swift River Woman’s eyes, sharp and restless, darted from the fire to the surrounding darkness, her warrior’s spirit a coiled spring, ready to launch. Across from them, Silent Hawk sat with his usual quietude, his presence a somber tide, his gaze lost somewhere beyond the familiar horizon.

The air, thick with the scent of pine and damp earth, also carried the unspoken words, the tremors of unease that had brought them together. The renegades. The word itself was a jagged shard in the smooth stone of their unity, a betrayal that had bled into the very fabric of their people.

“They grow bolder,” Swift River Woman finally broke the silence, her voice a low rumble, like stones shifting in a riverbed. “The whispers reach even these sacred grounds. They raid the southern settlements, taking what is not theirs, sowing fear where there should be kinship.”
