The air, once crisp with the scent of pine and damp earth, now carried a different perfume – a thin, metallic tang that spoke of disturbed soil and something less natural. Elder Stone Hand, his weathered face a roadmap of seasons and sorrows, paused, his gaze sweeping across the shadowed valley. His breath plumed in the cool air, a silent question to the indifferent trees. Beside him, Swift River Woman, her movements as fluid as the water for which she was named, knelt, her fingers tracing the faint impression in the loam.

"They have passed this way," she murmured, her voice a low reed against the rustling leaves. "Recently."

Silent Hawk, a silhouette against the deepening twilight, moved with an animal grace. He did not speak, but his stillness was a testament to his keen awareness. His eyes, sharp and dark, scanned the undergrowth, as if the very shadows might betray the secrets they held. The weight of their shared purpose pressed down on them, a tangible thing in the hushed forest. They were not merely traveling; they were pursuing ghosts, the specters of their own kin who had chosen to walk a path of defiance.
