Chapter 9
The Sparkling Stream
The riddle's solution points them towards a seemingly ordinary stream. Jhon feels a sense of unease, but Bob's optimism keeps him going.
Jhon turned the key. Nothing. He turned it again. Still nothing but a sad, defeated click from under the hood. He sighed, the sound a little puff of frustration in the quiet morning air. His trusty, albeit ancient, car, which he affectionately called 'The Rusty Rocket' (mostly because it was rusty and rarely rocketed anywhere), had finally decided to take a permanent nap. "Oh, for the love of…," he muttered, giving the steering wheel a gentle, then not-so-gentle, thump. This was precisely the kind of thing that made his life feel like a perpetually beige Tuesday. He’d been hoping for a spark, a jolt, anything to shake up the predictable rhythm of his days, and here he was, staring at a dead car.
With a resigned sigh, Jhon grabbed his worn messenger bag. The bus it was, then. The thought of public transport, of sharing recycled air and the faint scent of stale crisps, did little to lift his spirits. He trudged towards the bus stop, his shoulders slumping a little with each step. As he approached, the familiar rumble of the number 17 bus grew louder. He fumbled for his bus pass, his mind already replaying the boring spreadsheet he’d been staring at yesterday.
The bus doors hissed open, and Jhon stepped inside, his eyes scanning the mostly empty seats. Then, his breath caught. Sitting a few rows ahead, bathed in the soft glow of the morning sun filtering through the window, was Bob. Bob, with his easy smile and eyes that always seemed to twinkle, even when he was just talking about the weather. Jhon’s heart did a little flutter, a tiny, rebellious bird escaping its cage. He quickly averted his gaze, pretending to be engrossed in the peeling advertisement for discount dental work above the driver’s head.
