Seeds of Change

Jhon yanked the car door open with a sigh that felt as rusty as the hinges. He slid into the driver’s seat, the familiar worn fabric doing little to soothe his morning grumbles. He turned the key, a sound that usually rumbled to life with a confident roar. Today, it offered only a pathetic click, a sound that echoed his own internal groan. He tried again. Nothing. He slumped back, the steering wheel cool against his forehead. “Oh, come ON!” he muttered, kicking the dashboard lightly, a gesture that was more frustration than force. His car, his trusty, if slightly asthmatic, chariot, had decided to stage a rebellion.

Defeated, Jhon slammed the car door shut, the sound a punctuation mark on his morning’s failure. “Right,” he mumbled to himself, fishing his phone out of his pocket. “Bus it is.” The thought of the bus usually brought a small, defeated sigh. It was the symbol of his routine, the steady, predictable, and frankly, a little bit boring, rhythm of his life. But today, anything was better than staring at a car that refused to cooperate.

He trudged to the bus stop, the morning air crisp and carrying the faint scent of damp earth and exhaust fumes. He waited, tapping his foot, watching the world go by in its usual unhurried fashion. Then, the lumbering beast of a bus huffed into view, its yellow paint dulled by countless journeys. Jhon climbed aboard, the air inside thick with the mingled scents of cheap air freshener and damp coats. He paid his fare, the driver, a man whose face seemed carved from granite and patience, barely grunted in acknowledgment. Jhon scanned the seats, a familiar pang of resignation settling in his chest. He hated the bus. It was a rolling testament to the fact that his life was going nowhere particularly exciting.
