Jhon tugged at the car door handle, a familiar jiggle that usually coaxed the old jalopy to life. Today, however, it offered only a disheartening clunk. He tried the ignition. Nothing. Not even a sputter, not a sigh of mechanical distress, just a vast, echoing silence where the engine’s rumble should have been. He slumped against the steering wheel, a groan escaping his lips. “Oh, for crying out loud,” he muttered, the sound swallowed by the cavernous interior of his car. He trudged to the nearest bus stop, the pavement feeling unusually long and the sun, which usually just felt like a cheerful presence, now seemed to mock him with its relentless, ordinary warmth. He stood there, hands shoved deep into his pockets, feeling a prickle of annoyance. This was exactly the kind of thing that made him want to… well, change things. To do something different, something exciting, something that didn’t involve the smell of stale exhaust fumes and the faint, unsettling aroma of old sandwiches.
