Jhon’s hand hovered over the ignition, a familiar ritual that had, for years, been the prelude to his commute. He turned the key. Nothing. Not a sputter, not a groan, not even a pathetic little cough of defiance. Just… silence. A profound, soul-crushing silence that echoed the emptiness he felt inside. He tried again. Still nothing. He leaned his forehead against the cool plastic of the steering wheel, a sigh escaping his lips that felt as heavy as a sack of potatoes. His car, his trusty, albeit slightly wheezy, chariot to the land of spreadsheets and lukewarm coffee, had finally given up the ghost.

“Oh, you’ve got to be kidding me,” he muttered, his voice a low rumble in the sudden quiet. He pictured the mechanic’s smug face, the astronomical bill, the days without wheels. It was too much. His carefully constructed routine, the very thing he was so desperately trying to escape, was now crumbling thanks to a dead battery or some other equally mundane mechanical failure. The dreaded, slow, and often overcrowded bus. The very antithesis of his desire for change. He trudged to the bus stop, a familiar knot of dread tightening in his stomach. The bus, when it finally wheezed its way into view, was a vibrant, slightly battered beast of public transport, its windows smeared with the fingerprints of a thousand hurried journeys. He paid his fare, the coins feeling cold and insignificant in his palm, and shuffled towards the back, his usual strategy for avoiding eye contact.
