The blinking cursor on my screen felt like a tiny, accusatory eye. Chef Antoine Dubois’s latest email was a masterpiece of passive aggression, each perfectly spaced word a tiny, polished pebble of disappointment. “Marvellous,” it began, a single word that managed to convey a world of ‘you’re not quite there yet.’ He wanted his new restaurant’s branding to be ‘an olfactory sonnet, a gustatory epiphany, yet also… approachable. Like a warm hug from a Michelin star.’
I reread the phrase, my brow furrowed so deeply I was sure I’d permanently etched a canyon into my forehead. A warm hug from a Michelin star. What did that even mean? Was it the plush velvet of the dining room chairs? The hushed reverence of the waiters? Or was it the faint, lingering scent of burnt sugar and existential dread that accompanied every elite dining experience? My brain felt like a tangled ball of yarn, each strand a design concept that refused to unravel neatly.
My studio, usually a sanctuary of organised chaos, felt like a pressure cooker. Sketches littered every surface, each one a testament to my increasingly frantic attempts to translate Dubois’s maddeningly vague pronouncements into something tangible. Elegant yet approachable? I’d tried a minimalist serif font paired with a slightly wobbly illustration of a whisk. Dubois had sent it back with a single, devastating word: “Sterile.” Modern with a vintage soul? I’d experimented with a retro-futuristic typeface that looked suspiciously like it belonged on a Soviet-era propaganda poster, alongside a colour palette that screamed ‘art deco bordello.’ Dubois had responded with a curt, “Are we opening a speakeasy or a butcher shop?”
