The air in Dr. Evelyn Reed’s pristine office at Spellman University was thick with the scent of old paper and expensive perfume. Sunlight, filtered through the blinds, cast striped shadows across the polished mahogany desk where Kamari and Omar Burton sat, their faces etched with a familiar fatigue. They had been here before, chasing ghosts, sifting through hushed confessions and veiled threats, but something about this conversation with their former mentor felt different. A subtle shift, like the tremor of an earthquake just before the ground splits.

“The security footage from the library is proving… uncooperative,” Dr. Reed began, her voice smooth as polished obsidian. She gestured to a laptop displaying a grainy, looping image of an empty hallway. “A power surge, it seems. Utterly unfortunate timing.”

Kamari’s gaze flickered from the screen to Dr. Reed’s face. The professor’s eyes, usually bright with intellectual curiosity, held a depth Kamari couldn’t quite fathom. There was a practiced calm about her, a carefully constructed facade that was beginning to show hairline fractures under Kamari’s scrutiny. “Uncooperative,” Kamari echoed, letting the word hang in the air. She’d seen enough power surges to know they rarely coincided with the exact moments a murder was committed, and even less often erased the relevant footage.
