The sirens had long since faded, leaving only the sterile hum of the precinct and the ghost of adrenaline coursing through Kamari’s veins. The air, thick with the scent of stale coffee and unspoken exhaustion, felt heavier than usual. Beside her, Omar sat hunched over his desk, his gaze fixed on a case file that was now, blessedly, closed. The weight of what they had just endured, the raw betrayal and the brutal confrontation, pressed down on them both. It was a silence born not of indifference, but of shared understanding, a language forged in the crucible of their investigation.

Kamari finally broke it, her voice raspy. "He confessed." It was a statement of fact, devoid of triumph. The confession, wrung out of their father after the final, desperate struggle, had been a hollow echo of the man they thought they knew. Charles Burton, the decorated detective, the loving patriarch, had been the architect of their nightmare. The motive, a tangled mess of perceived injustices and a warped sense of legacy, was almost as chilling as the acts themselves.

Omar looked up, his eyes, usually so sharp and analytical, were shadowed with a profound weariness. "He really lost it, Kamari. After Mom… he just spiraled. He saw the world through a broken lens, and Spellman, with its prestige, its perceived judgment… it became the focus of his rage." He ran a hand over his face, the gesture one of pure depletion. "All those years… we never saw it. Not a single sign."
