The air in the cabin hung thick and heavy, a suffocating blanket woven from the scent of pine and unspoken dread. Rain lashed against the windows, each drop a frantic drumbeat against the rising tension. Kamari’s heart hammered a frantic rhythm against her ribs, a counterpoint to the storm outside and the chilling realization that was unfurling within. Her brother, Omar, stood beside her, his usual stoic composure fractured, his eyes wide with a dawning horror that mirrored her own.

“He… he wouldn’t,” Omar whispered, the words catching in his throat like shards of glass.

Kamari didn’t answer. She couldn’t. The premonition, dismissed for so long as stress-induced phantoms, had slammed into her with the force of a physical blow just moments ago. A flash of their mother, her face pale and terrified, her hands bound. A glint of steel. A dark, shadowed figure – a figure she knew, a figure she had loved. It wasn’t Dr. Reed, not Thorne, not anyone they’d suspected. It was someone closer. Someone who had been in their lives since the beginning.
