Detective Marcus Thorne stood on the rain-slicked asphalt of the Spellman campus, the flashing blue and red of the patrol cars painting the sodden quad in garish strokes. Another one. This made it three in as many weeks, each more brutal, more audacious than the last. The first two, students found in quiet corners of the library and a deserted lecture hall, had been unsettling. This one, sprawled on the steps of Alumnae Hall, bathed in the unforgiving glare of the crime scene lights, was a declaration of war.

He felt the familiar knot tighten in his gut, a cold dread that had nothing to do with the damp chill seeping into his bones and everything to do with the gnawing unease that had been his constant companion since they’d been called to the first scene. He’d mentored Kamari and Omar Burton from their academy days, seen their raw talent, their unwavering dedication. But this case… this case felt different. It felt personal, a phantom limb aching with a pain he couldn’t quite place.

Kamari, ever the observer, moved with a quiet intensity, her eyes scanning the periphery, absorbing details others missed. Omar, his twin, was the anchor, the methodical force, meticulously documenting every fiber, every shadow. They were a formidable pair, their synergy honed by a lifetime of shared experience.
