The air in the Echoing Caves was thick with the scent of damp earth and ancient secrets. Kaelen sat by the meager fire, the flames casting dancing shadows that seemed to writhe like the memories he tried so desperately to outrun. Master Borin watched him, his eyes, like polished obsidian, holding a depth that Kaelen found both comforting and unnerving. For days, they had spoken, or rather, Borin had spoken, and Kaelen had listened, his soul slowly being peeled back layer by layer, exposing the raw, festering wound of his past.
"The Sundered Heart," Borin had said, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through the stone, "is not a weapon, Kaelen. It is a mirror. It shows you what you truly are, and then it amplifies it."
Kaelen had nodded, the words echoing the earlier lessons. But today, Borin’s gaze was more intense, more probing. "You speak of redemption, of restoring trust. But what does that truly mean to you, Kaelen? Is it the cheers of the villagers, the lifting of their scorn? Or is it something deeper, something you must find within yourself, independent of their judgment?"
