The chill that permeated the ceremonial chamber had little to do with the ancient stone and everything to do with the hushed, fearful whispers that slithered through the assembled crowd. Elara clutched her grey egg, its dull surface a stark contrast to the vibrant hues of the others, each promising a creature of predictable, if varied, power. Her own mana core, a barely discernible shade of grey, pulsed with a familiar anxiety. She was the anomaly, the exception to the rule, and today, her anomaly was about to hatch.

Around her, golden eggs pulsed with inner light, promising winged griffins and fiery drakes. Emerald eggs hummed with earthy energy, hinting at sturdy earth elementals and swift forest spirits. Even the common blues and greens held the promise of useful, if unremarkable, companions. But Elara’s egg, a forgotten stone in a treasure hoard, offered no such assurance. It was a void, a question mark in a world that prized certainty above all else.

Archivist Thorne, his face a mask of practiced neutrality, observed the proceedings from a raised dais. His gaze, however, lingered on Elara for a fraction too long, a flicker of something unreadable in his sharp eyes. Commander Valerius, resplendent in his polished silver armor, stood a pace behind Thorne, his jaw set, his presence radiating an almost palpable disapproval. He represented the iron fist of the Order, the unwavering enforcers of the mana hierarchy, and Elara knew, with a certainty that chilled her to the bone, that he saw her as a threat, an imperfection to be smoothed out.
