Chapter 4
The Whispering Willow's Secrets
Beneath the weeping boughs of the ancient willow, the girl seeks solace from the encroaching sorrow. As she rests against its gnarled trunk, the rustling of its leaves seems to shift, transforming from a mournful sigh into a cascade of fragmented whispers. These are not the voices of the wind, but echoes of forgotten tales, half-remembered stories that hint at a deeper truth about her origins and the nature of the shadow. The words are elusive, like smoke, yet they stir a nascent curiosity within her, a sense that the answers to her disquiet lie hidden within these ancient, arboreal secrets.
The girl, known by so many names the wind could never quite catch them all, sought refuge beneath the weeping boughs of the ancient willow. Its branches, like long, sorrowful arms, reached towards the earth, their leaves a cascade of emerald tears. They were tiny sounds, like the scuttling of beetles on dry leaves, or the distant murmur of a forgotten conversation. These were not the wind’s playful nudges, but something older, deeper, stirring from the very roots of the ancient tree.
“Listen,” a whisper seemed to coil around her ear, so faint she thought it might have been her own breath. “Listen to the roots… they remember.”
