Chapter 4
The Owl's Riddles
A wise old owl blocks their path, offering passage only if they solve three riddles. Lily and Anna face the challenge, their combined intellect put to the test.
The air in the Whispering Woods grew thick with a magic that hummed against Lily’s skin, a familiar thrum that only she and Anna seemed to feel. Sunlight, dappled and golden, filtered through leaves that whispered secrets only the wind could translate. They had followed the winding path deeper than ever before, the playful chatter of unseen sprites and the distant laughter of river nymphs their only companions. Anna, her hand clasped tightly in Lily’s, scanned the gnarled roots and moss-laden branches with an eager, determined glint in her eyes. She was the anchor in Lily’s adrift world, the one constant in a sea of fleeting glances and averted gazes.
“Are you sure this is the way, Anna?” Lily’s voice, though soft, held a tremor of excitement, a rare bloom in the garden of her quiet existence. The woods were their sanctuary, a place where the curse that clung to her like a shadow seemed to loosen its grip, allowing her to breathe a little freer. Here, the rustling leaves almost sounded like recognition, and the scent of damp earth felt like a welcoming embrace.
Anna squeezed her hand. “The book said the treasure lies where the oldest roots drink the deepest magic. And look,” she pointed to a colossal oak, its branches like ancient arms reaching for the sky, its trunk so wide it would take ten people to encircle it, “this tree looks like it’s been here since the dawn of time. This has to be it.”
