Chapter 4
A Canvas of Hurt
A heated exchange erupts over the sculpture. Elsie's harsh words, fueled by insecurity, cut Maya deeply. The friendship strains, leaving Maya feeling hurt and questioning Elsie's true appreciation for her support.
The air in Elsie’s studio, usually buzzing with a creative energy that Maya found infectious, now felt thick, almost suffocating. The centerpiece of the upcoming exhibition, a swirling, abstract sculpture of polished driftwood and shimmering glass, stood on its pedestal, a monument to their shared anticipation. But today, it was also a monument to their burgeoning discord. Maya had spent days meticulously arranging the smaller pieces, ensuring each painting and sketch was positioned to capture the light just so, creating a narrative flow through the gallery space. Elsie, however, had been fixated on the sculpture.
“No, no, no,” Elsie’s voice, sharp as a palette knife, sliced through the quiet hum of the studio. She circled the sculpture, her brow furrowed in a way that Maya had come to recognize as the precursor to a critique. “The angle is all wrong, Maya. It needs to face more towards the entrance. People should be drawn in, not just stumble upon it.”
Maya, who had just finished adjusting a small, framed charcoal drawing of a cityscape, felt a familiar prickle of irritation. “But Elsie,” she began, her voice soft, “if we turn it that way, the light from the window will create a glare on the glass. And look, this way, it flows better into the next section. It’s a journey, remember?”
