Maya watched Elsie’s face, really watched it, for the first time in what felt like weeks. The sharp angles of her jaw, usually set in a determined line, were softened by a vulnerability that Maya hadn’t seen since they were children, scraped knees and shared secrets under starry skies. The vibrant, almost frantic energy that usually pulsed around Elsie was subdued, replaced by a quiet, earnest sincerity. It was in the way her hands, usually so quick to gesture and direct, were clasped tightly in her lap, the knuckles white. It was in the slight tremor of her voice, the way her eyes, the color of deep sea glass, pleaded for understanding.

"I... I don't know how to say this without it sounding like I'm just making excuses," Elsie began, her voice barely above a whisper, yet it carried the weight of a confession. She cleared her throat, taking a shaky breath. "But the truth is, Maya, I was terrified. Not just of the exhibition not being good enough, but of *me* not being good enough. Of all of this," she gestured vaguely around the quiet studio, the scent of turpentine and dried paint a familiar comfort, "being for nothing. And instead of talking about it, instead of trusting you, I just… I pushed. I tried to control everything, because if I could control the outcome, maybe I could control the fear."

Maya listened, her own hurt a dull ache beneath the surface. It wasn't an excuse, not entirely, but it was an explanation, a glimpse into the insecurities that Elsie so fiercely guarded. The bossiness, the nosey intrusions, the dismissive waves of her hand – it had all felt like a deliberate chipping away at Maya’s own contributions, at her very worth. But hearing Elsie admit her fear, her deep-seated insecurity, shifted something within Maya. It didn’t erase the pain, but it softened the sharp edges of her resentment.
