The scent of artificial grape and existential dread hung heavy in the air. Not a typical combination, I’ll grant you, but then again, nothing about my life had been typical since Arke landed—or rather, *plopped*—onto the scene. Today’s particular brand of chaos involved a giant inflatable dinosaur, a misplaced box of glitter, and Arke’s valiant, yet ultimately futile, attempt to explain the concept of “personal space” to a swarm of aggressive pigeons.

“Honestly, Sandy,” Arke sighed, carefully swatting away a particularly bold avian with the back of his hand, his mane rippling with indignity. “These creatures possess no respect for boundaries. It’s quite… uncivilized.”

I giggled, stuffing another handful of ‘Cosmic Cola’ flavored chips into my mouth. “That’s just Earth, Arke. You gotta learn to roll with the punches. Or the pigeon droppings, as the case may be.” I gestured vaguely at the rapidly expanding mess around us in the park. The inflatable dinosaur, a promotional gimmick for a new kids’ movie, had sprung a leak and was slowly deflating, its once-proud roar now a pathetic wheeze. The box of glitter, which I’d been meaning to use for a craft project, had somehow tumbled from my backpack and was now creating a sparkling, albeit highly inconvenient, hazard zone.
