Chapter 6
Mother Knows Best (Through Yarn)
Antoinette's mother offers another knitting metaphor, this time referencing tangled threads and lost stitches. Antoinette struggles to decipher the meaning, but it subtly guides her towards understanding the curse.
Antoinette’s mother, a woman whose silence was as profound as her pronouncements were baffling, sat hunched over her latest creation. The needles clicked with a rhythm that could either soothe a savage beast or, in Antoinette’s current state of mind, induce a nervous tic. The yarn, a swirling tempest of charcoal and a disconcerting shade of bruised plum, was being worked into a scarf of truly epic proportions. It trailed from her lap, pooled on the floor, and threatened to ensnare the unsuspecting cat who had ventured too close.
“Mother,” Antoinette began, her voice a strained whisper, as if any sudden noise might shatter the delicate, woolly atmosphere. “I… I just don’t understand.” She gestured vaguely towards the infernal scarf. “You said something about… tangled threads?”
Her mother’s needles paused for a fraction of a second, a cosmic event in their usual relentless dance. Her eyes, magnified behind thick spectacles, remained fixed on the wool. “A knot,” she finally rasped, her voice like dry leaves skittering across pavement, “is merely a stitch that has forgotten its purpose. And a lost stitch,” she added, her gaze drifting towards the window where a single, forlorn crow perched on the fence, “is an invitation for the wind to unravel everything.”
