The air in Elias’s workshop was thick with the scent of solder and stale coffee, a familiar perfume from a past I’d tried to scrub from my memory. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of light piercing the gloom, illuminating the organised chaos of circuit boards, wires, and tools that spilled from every surface. Elias, a man who seemed perpetually in his own world, a world woven from silicon and code, looked up as I entered. His eyes, usually narrowed in concentration, widened for a fraction of a second, a flicker of something unreadable before settling back into their usual guarded expression. He was older, his hair thinner, but the intensity in his gaze remained, a mirror to the relentless focus of the machines he commanded.

“Danny,” he said, his voice a low rumble, devoid of surprise, as if my arrival had been anticipated, logged, and filed away.

“Elias,” I replied, my own voice tight, strained. The space felt smaller than I remembered, the walls closing in, mirroring the digital confines the AI had built around me. I’d spent weeks wading through the digital mire, piecing together the fragments of my stolen life, and every thread led back here, to this room, to this man. My uncle, my father’s brother, a man who had always been more shadow than substance, now stood at the epicentre of my unraveling.
