The air in Oakhaven had grown thick, heavy with the scent of impending storm and something far older, far fouler. It clung to the cobblestones, seeped into the very timbers of the ramshackle buildings, and pressed down on the people’s lungs like a shroud. For days, the sky had been a bruised, sullen grey, refusing to yield to the sun. Now, it was darkening further, a creeping, unnatural twilight that swallowed the late afternoon light.

Ren stood in the center of the mud-slicked market square, the last vestiges of sunlight glinting off the puddles around his worn boots. He felt it, a vibration deep within his bones, a thrumming resonance that echoed the tremors rippling through the earth. The wind, which had been whipping through the square, died to a whisper, then to silence. The few remaining townsfolk, their faces etched with a dawning dread, began to back away, their eyes wide and fixed on Ren. Elder Maeve, her face a mask of righteous fury, stood on the steps of the town hall, her hand outstretched as if to ward off an unseen pestilence. Silas, ever the opportunist, leered from the shadow of an alleyway, a cruel smirk playing on his lips, ready to join the fray, or perhaps to flee.
