The air in Oakhaven had always carried a certain damp chill, a constant reminder of the shadowed woods that pressed in on its borders. But tonight, the chill was different. It wasn’t the biting wind of autumn, nor the icy breath of winter. This was a cold that seeped into the bone, a primal dread that whispered of things ancient and terrible stirring from a long, uneasy sleep.

Ren, huddled in his usual alcove beneath the bridge, felt it first. It was a resonance, a thrumming deep within his core that echoed the tremors beginning to snake through the earth. He’d felt the whispers of that power for years, a restless energy coiled tight in his gut, a storm waiting for the first crack of thunder. Tonight, the sky itself seemed to be clearing its throat.

Above him, the stars, usually so sharp and clear in Oakhaven’s unpolluted sky, began to blur. It was as if a veil of bruised twilight was slowly being drawn across the heavens, smearing the familiar constellations into indistinct smudges of light. A low hum, like the guttural song of a thousand sleeping beasts, began to fill the silence, drowning out the usual creaks of the old wooden town and the distant bark of a stray dog.
